Kenya’s digital vaccine warriors
This case study by GAVI describes how the Savannah Innovation Hub, a digital sanctuary offering training opportunities to more than one hundred young women to identify misinformation, has empowered a growing army of young women in Garissa County, Kenya, to use social media as a tool to educate marginalized communities on useful COVID-19 information and containment. These women were trained on the use of social media platforms such as TikTok to reach young girls and women suffering from information poverty and provide relevant and fact- based information. The original initiative aimed to conduct STEM and coding training; however, the increased COVID-19 misinformation campaigns targeting young women diverted the attention to re-focus the initiative on educating young women, promoting vaccine acceptance and empowering digital female warriors to shoot down misinformation and report the social media accounts to tech companies.
